![]() The free version of LastPass no longer syncs across all your devices, but instead only on your computers or on your mobile devices - not both. ![]() LastPass remains on our list of the best password managers despite its recent security issues due to its ease of use, support for all major platforms and its wide range of features, even though its once-excellent free tier has been greatly diminished. The only major downsides to Bitwarden are a somewhat limited desktop app and the fact that the mobile apps can't auto-fill credit-card numbers or other non-login information. Other key features are an innovative secure information-sharing service called Send, a "portable" Windows version that you can install on a flash drive and extensions for eight different browsers. Privacy geeks will appreciate that Bitwarden gives you the option of setting up your own server to sync your passwords. The plan for families is also a steal at $40 per year for up to six people. Meanwhile, Bitwarden's $10-per-year paid version has most of the features you'd find with LastPass, Keeper or 1Password, though it can be a bit counter-intuitive to use. Now that LastPass has hobbled its own free service, Bitwarden is the best option for anyone who wants to sync all their logins across all their devices without paying a dime. Launched in 2016, Bitwarden has soared into ranks of the top password managers with its low prices, attractive design and full-featured free tier. Even if you forget to un-share something, it expires automatically and the recipient's access is removed. This feature lets users share links that can only be used on one device and automatically expire at a time of your choosing. To make it easier to securely share confidential information with friends, family and co-workers, Keeper has added One-Time Share to its password manager. It also offers a free secure messaging service. It offers a consistent, if not flashy, user interface no matter which platform you're using, and 20 templates to fill in personal documents such as passports and driver's licenses. Keeper's free tier gives you everything except syncing across devices.įor an extra $25 per year, Keeper will also monitor the internet for unauthorized use of your personal data and give you 10GB of secure cloud storage, or you can add those services individually for $20 and $10 per year, respectively. Keeper ( $20.98 per year for Tom's Guide readers (opens in new tab)) is fast and full-featured, stores files and documents of any kind and has perhaps the best security of any password manager. By itself, the VPN costs $96 yearly, so it's a huge bargain when bundled with Dashlane. That makes Dashlane Premium's $60 price tag well worth it if you need these extra services. On the upside, the Dashlane Premium plan offers dark-web monitoring and unlimited VPN service, the latter courtesy of Hotspot Shield. ![]() Dashlane's free plan is limited to one device but it does let you store an unlimited number of passwords. Its Premium plan is $60 per year, or $78 per year if you pay monthly. A scanner also goes through your email inbox to find online accounts you may have forgotten about.ĭashlane's drawback is its high price. The password manager is well designed, easy to use and excellent at filling out your personal information in online forms. Its killer feature remains a bulk password changer that can reset hundreds of passwords at once. Dashlane matches LastPass, 1Password and Keeper in platform support and has very intuitive desktop software. ![]() Where Safari is strong, however, is that it is built for the Apple universe. There are certainly faster browsers that you can customize more, like Chrome and Firefox. Whether or not there is a better alternative to Safari for Mac is hard to answer. This version of Safari is for Mac and iOS. Being an Apple product, Safari also has excellent support and documentation available should you ever run into problems. The start-up takes only seconds and load time for even content-heavy pages feels fast with no noticeable lag. In tests, it’s not the fastest but average users won’t notice. Testing shows the browser to be light and fast. The Reading List also offers you a setting that converts articles into an easy-to-read, ad-free version which is great if you’re an avid reader.Įven though Safari was originally intended for the Appleverse, it works fine on other sites, even ones like Google Docs. It’s particularly nicely integrated with Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, so if you use these apps you’ll find using Safari a smooth experience. It takes its color scheme from your system settings, so if you have Dark Mode enabled, Safari looks cool. The first thing you notice when you open Safari is that it’s a slick, attractive browser that looks fresh and modern. Good looks, security, and speed in a browser A fast, secure browser for all iOS devices ![]() ![]() What other key screens might there be? Well, the shopping cart for one. What are you selling? Start with the unique aspects of that and what information should be displayed on that screen to help a customer make a decision. One of the key screens will be your product detail page. Let's say you are creating an e-commerce website/app. However, it might be a bit easier once you get the guts of your website or app a bit more fleshed out. It requires a lot of thinking and iteration. It's the "front door" of your website/app. But sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming. Why not just start on the homepage and go screen by screen from there? Starting with the home screen is definitely a great idea. Low-fidelity wireframes of those key screens. The happy path, or paths needed to accomplish that goal.Process for discovering key screens to wireframe You can do this work with pen & paper, on a whiteboard, or in Balsamiq. We can decide if we need more or fewer screens to help the user down the happy path. We just want to know what the purpose of each screen is at this point. Notice that we don't say "click on this button" or "fill out this field." Notice that at this point, there are no UI elements seen. The arrows represent what a user does after viewing that screen. The boxes represent what the user sees on the screen. Let's break this user flow down a bit more. Your low-fidelity wireframes should capture the essence of the conceptual experience, but not all the detailed interactions at this point. What information needs to be conveyed to them and/or collected from them? If you are still stuck, try thinking about the specific problem you are trying to solve for the people who will be most affected by your idea. This is the best case scenario where someone accomplishes the goal you want them to achieve using your website or app. You start with what we call the happy path. Then, think through the flow of how you want that person to accomplish each goal. One trick is to think about the goal or goals you want people to achieve on your website. The important thing to think about is what makes your product different. This could be just a couple of screens, 1 or 2, or maybe 10. Wireframing your product’s key screens should be the first pass of your interface design, making the highest priority screens the most visible in your first version of the design document.Īsk yourself, “what are the screens that are essential to our product that make it unique from another product?” Don’t think of login or register screens at this point (unless you are a security firm □). Key screens are the interfaces that convey the essence of your product or service. If you are having any issues, shoot us an email, Contact MPGH Support.
![]() "Those who find meaning in religion lack the capacity to question and doubt, an irony lost on Dawkins, who suffers from the same disorder." And the attempt to seek a purely rational existence is itself an act of faith. Dawkins, for example, inhabits a childish binary world of good and evil devoid of nuance and complexity in which he dismisses competing faiths as blind and heretical. They may seem to seek truth (as revealed by science) but they are anti-intellectual, unwilling to examine what they don't understand. The new atheists misuse the teachings of Darwin and evolutionary biology as Christian fundamentalists misuse the Bible. Is this rational? Beneficial? The problem is not religion, reason or science it is people - messy, complex and irrational. A huge proportion of American scientists work in defence-related industries building weapons that can wipe out millions. Today, Hedges says, much science is not directed at solving problems but making profits. The first slaughter in the name of science and reason was the French Revolution the gulags and Hiroshima followed. The problem is that scientific advance is not connected with moral advance. Unfortunately, science and reason have as poor a track record as religion - worse, because they produced slaughter on an industrial scale. Harris calls Muslims deranged, Dennett would allow aspects of religion - its art and music and rituals - to be preserved only in some sort of zoo. The new atheists, Hedges says, know how to make humanity perfect and must therefore eradicate the competing visions that pollute society and lead people astray. Hedges replies that Harris, "like all Utopians, has reduced millions of human beings and cultures he knows nothing about to primitive impediments to his vision of a better world". For example, Harris, whom Hedges debated last year, claims some propositions are so dangerous it may be ethical to kill people for believing them and calls for a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the Islamic world. It is dangerous because, like religious utopian views, it believes that if it can eradicate other views, this will lead to a perfect society - which justifies butchering or expelling those with other views. It tells us what is right and wrong not according to God but "the purity of the rational mind", allowing no dissent - and wraps the intolerance in Enlightenment virtues. It tries to reduce sacred texts to instruction manuals. It is intolerant because it is based on a closed worldview that dismisses all other views without even examining them. And Hedges finds the agenda of the new atheists - Hitchens, Harris, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and others - equally intolerant and dangerous. "They ask us to kneel before little idols that look and act like them, telling us that one day, if we trust enough in God or reason, we will have everything we desire." The battle is not between religion and science but religious and secular fundamentalism. Like Christian radicals, the new atheists have built squalid little belief systems that serve themselves and their own power, that seek to scare people about what they do not understand, and to use this fear to justify cruelty and war. This, combined with despair at religious fundamentalism, points him towards a profound pessimism about the "dying culture" of an increasingly militarised and corporatised America indeed, about humanity. Hedges marshals an array of evidence and arguments against the "new atheists" from history, literature, philosophy and the atheistic double-deity of science and reason. His own religious position is obscure: he has little time for fundamentalists or liberals. ![]() He spent decades as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and other publications, studied at Harvard Divinity School and now lectures at Princeton. He presciently predicted two weeks after George Bush's "mission accomplished" speech how damaging the Iraqi occupation would be. ![]() He has been just as scathing about religious fundamentalism in American Fascists, his bestseller attacking the religious right. This brilliant book highlights what is obvious to most reasonable observers: that these fundamentalist atheists, with their vapid, complacent self-righteousness and their facile and unjustifiable certainties, are the precise mirror image of the fundamentalist Christians, Muslims etc they so despise. And certainly not Sam Harris, who wants to bomb the "deranged" Muslims into oblivion before they bomb us. But if Chris Hedges is right, the world can't afford Christopher Hitchens. CHRISTOPHER Hitchens, Sam Harris and Co say the world can't afford religious people. ![]() Something like shortening it to three sectors, but giving players a bunch of starting scrap and access to a Super-shop at the beginning of the run with lots of options to build your ship. It’d be super hectic to try to control all of them at once, but it could be really cool.Įdit: Another option could be to minimize RNG by giving the players more agency in their ship build and less time before meeting the other player. Maybe a way to do that would be to remove crew skill at different tasks, and replace it with a way for the player to increase dodge/weapon reload/shield recharge. And after playing for an hour, an outcome decided largely by a series of dice rolls will be unsatisfying, I think.Īll that said, if there was a way to increase the impact of skill on the outcome over RNG, then it could be awesome. The end result is that the potential difference in ship outfits because of RNG is going to have a much bigger impact than player skill. There aren’t all that many options or strategies available to a player at any given moment, so given two players of similar skill, there is only a little room to outplay the other person. The fact is that micromanaging your ship’s systems doesn’t have as much of an impact when both players are doing it. The biggest problem in a head to head mode is that RNG would likely determine the victor way more often than skill would. Smith used the term 'ultrawave' in his Lensman series, for waves which propagated through a sub-ether and could be used for weapons, communications, and other applications. Point is, it’s fun because the odds are stacked against you, but with a little luck, and enough skill, you just might pull it off. The terms 'ultrawave' and 'hyperwave' have been used by several authors, often interchangeably, to denote faster-than-light communications. Ships have a very straightforward AI, so a reasonably skilled player can manipulate that to their advantage. Once you’re in combat, you immediately know what systems on the enemy ship pose the biggest threat so you can target them. This is still one of the finest games to be released in. Many events have set outcomes based on what outfits/crew you have. FTL: Faster Than Light was an outstanding game all the way back in 2012, and the Advanced Edition content doesn’t screw that up at all. ![]() Part of what makes this work is that once you have information, it is very predictable. ![]() As you get better, you learn how to perform well even when RNG isn’t in your favor. RNG is a major factor, which is why Long Range Scanners are one of the best augments: because it provides knowledge to mitigate some of that RNG. FTL is all about risk management and making the best of a bad situation. I think in order for PvP to be viable in FTL, it would have to be very different than its current form. ![]() The masterclass will show you how to import them and make them your own.
